Aretha Louise Franklin nasceu em Memphis, Tennessee, nos Estados Unidos, no dia 25 de março de 1942. Filha do reverendo Clarence LaVaughn Franklin e da cantora e pianista Barbara Siggers, cresceu rodeada de música gospel. O seu talento músical tornou-se evidente desde muito cedo, quando gravou o seu primeiro álbum com apenas 14 anos.
Mas o verdadeiro sucesso chegou aos 25 anos, quando entrou no mundo soul. Em 1967 começou a sua carreira na agência “Atlantic Record”, onde lançou temas universais como “NATURAL WOMAM” ou “R-E-S-P-E-C-T”.
A forma como transformou o seu sofrimento como mulher negra em canções universais, tornou-a “o símbolo da igualdade racial”. Com a sua voz a tornar-se um verdadeiro som revolucionário, não só como representante da América negra, mas também como uma representante dos direios da mulher, numa época em que as mulheres exigiam reconhecimento.
Durante a sua carreira ímpar de seis décadas, cativou milhões de pessoas, e mereceu todos os prémios. Ganhou 18 Grammys e 25 discos de ouro. Foi considerada pela revista Rolling Stone a cantora número um da era do rock, e está no top 10 das melhores cantoras de todos os tempos. Foi a primeira mulher a entrar para o Hall da Fama do Rock e a ganhar o prémio Pulitzer.
